Drive Through it

I am super excited about today's quote.  It comes from a scene in an excellent movie called Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall, and Nicole Kidman.  Released in 1990, this movie's 27 years old!  Tara and I happened to watch it again last night.

Let me set the scene:

Cole Trickle, played by Tom Cruise, is a successful NASCAR driver dealing with intense fear as he drives in the Daytona 500.  As the result of a horrific crash while racing, Trickle is almost numb with fear as he starts the race.  After a few laps, a crash occurs in turn 3, which will force Cole to relive and face his greatest fear.

Terrified, Cole approaches turn 3 and is faced with the exact same set of circumstances that led to his horrific crash, namely a race track completely covered with smoke and zero visibility.  Where does he go?  Does he take the high side, where last time it nearly killed him?  Or does he go low?  No matter what he has no choice - he must go through it.  Harry, his mechanic mentor played by Robert Duvall, tells Trickle to  take the turn "high," and he says "You must DRIVE THOUGH IT"

So Trickle trusts Harry and after a little hesitation put the pedal to the medal and takes the turn high.  In a powerful scene, Trickle passes through the smoke safely and goes on to win the Daytona 500.  I've included a clip here: https://youtu.be/e77ybggTHHg

This scene has served as great motivation for me over the years.  It serves as an incredible example of what to do when faced with paralyzing fear and true strength (A) is required: Drive through it!  Pick a lane and gun it.  Give it 100%.  Don't hedge, don't hesitate, don't doubt.  Trust yourself.  Gun it and go!

I've used this scene numerous times when encouraging others who are in fearful spots, where a decision to act is required.  Drive through it.  Pick a lane and gun it.  Give it 100%.  Don't hedge, don't hesitate, don't doubt.  Trust yourself.  Gun it and go!

One of the greatest impediments to success is fear.  A leader stands alone the most when faced with decisions like this; decisions that are wrapped in fear and have real consequences with no clear set of instructions or guaranteed outcome.  It's decisions like this that where leaning on your gut instinct is required.  Drive through it.  Pick a lane and gun it.  Give it 100%.  Don't hedge, don't hesitate, don't doubt.  Trust yourself.  Gun it and go!

What are you fearful of today?  Are you faced with a decision that scares you?  Have you been putting something off because you're not quite sure what to do?  If you want to stand apart, to be truly extra-ordinary, you need to drive through it.  Pick a lane and gun it.  Give it 100%.  Don't hedge, don't hesitate, don't doubt.  Trust yourself.  Gun it and go!

(A) Definition of True Strength: my definition of true strength is the conscious decision to enter into things that lack clear instructions, are chaotic in nature, and have no guaranteed outcome.
